This happens pretty often and people do not realize they have fell victim to this scam until it becomes too late. I have seen this happen to some of my friends and I have received such texts. The scammer is often trying to gain money from you by posing to be a good friend or family member reaching out through instagram direct messaging. They do this by taking over someone's instagram account because they had clicked on a link that gave there information out, then they Dm a bunch of people trying to act natural and just be short by being like hey can I ask a favor but then they do not go into great detail. People often do not think twice because they know the person and it's on instagram which most people trust. So they start texting asking what the scammer needs and the scammer tries to act like its a urgent matter like he needs the money bad. being that it seems urgent and being that it often times is a small amount and a friend asking you give pity and feel bad so you try to help them out. You can prevent this from happening to you by recognizing the signs scammers are going to use a sense of urgency and want you to send money through a more not trusted source. You can also try to get ahold of the person via another way of contact wether it is through text message, call, or face time to verify the identity and check if they actually need help.
